Established in 2001 as a Comair Limited subsidiary, Kulula Airlines has managed to entrench their brand firmly in the hearts and minds of South African air travellers through the use of their distinctly South African humour. As one of SA’s earliest low cost carriers, Kulula positioned itself as the leading budget carrier. The airline operates on all the major domestic flight routes, and is headquartered in Kempton Park, Gauteng.
The Kulula Flight Experience
As per Kulula’s slogan, the airline offers a “full-on” travel solution – from flights and car hire to holiday packages and accommodation. The same brand of humour presented in their brand is used on-board; from the entertaining Khuluma in-flight magazine to the hilarious in-flight announcement and security presentation style. Given thatKulula set out as a low-cost carrier, no complimentary catering is provided on-board. Snacks and refreshments can, however, be purchased from in-flight staff.

Kulula’s Fleet of 10 modern aircraft feature its signature bright green livery, which matches the company’s bold corporate identity. The fleet consists of one Boeing 737-400 and nine Boeing 737-800s, with an average aircraft age of around nine years across the fleet.
Kulula planes are well known for their distinctive, humorous and brightly coloured paint schemes. Some classic livery includes the ‘cow’ plane, ‘camo’ plane and ‘the jetsetter’ plane.
Kulula airlines has been placed under business rescue in an attempt to save the airline after being hit with travel restrictions because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The airline is planning on commencing with flights again in November of 2020.
21/06/2019Kulula passengers may now use portable electronic devices during the entire flight journey. The devices now allowed to be used on board all flights include smartphones, tablets, e-readers, MP3 players and smart watches. Devices must be used in flight mode or with the cellular connection off.

Carry on baggage
Kulula.com carry-on baggage is limited to one bag per person. With Kulula Airlines carry-on baggage must be 7 kilograms or lighter, and it must be smaller than 115 cm in length, width and height.
In addition to this other small personal items may be taken onboard such as; handbags, briefcases, laptop bags and vanity cases.
Checked baggage
Kulula.com travellers are allowed a maximum of 20 kilograms of checked baggage. Additional baggage over this allowance will cost R25 per kilo. The maximum dimensions are per item of luggage are 158cm in length, width and height. You may pay for the excess baggage beforehand online.
Pets have specific requirements for their transportation. Pets are not categories as checked in baggage, but rather charged a special rate in addition to the travellers “free” 20 kilogram allowance.
Infant’s baggage
Infants are entitled to one free checked in baggage weighing up to 10kg. In addition to this, a collapsible pushchair and a child car seat is also allowed onboard at no additional cost.
Special baggage
If you are travelling with special luggage like for example a bicycle, you must disassemble and pack it in a hard or soft case. You are also required to check-in no later than 90 minutes prior to departure.
Check-in at the counter
You will need your green ID book, driver’s license or passport to check-in. You can only check-in 24 hours before departure and up to 2 hours prior to the flight.
Self service check-in
Self service check-in is available at airports. Avoid long queues and check in and print your boarding pass at one of the self service machines. Self service check in closes at least 40 minutes prior to the departure time. You will drop your bags at the ‘fast bag drop off’ counters situated at the check in counters.
Online check-in
You can check-in online and print your own boarding passes. Online check-in starts 24 hours prior to departure. You will drop your bags at the ‘fast bag drop off’ counters situated at the check in counters.
There is no online check-in available for any short haul international departures. Home printed boarding passes are not accepted at Durban, George or Nelspruit airports.
Seating
A seat will be assigned to you at check-in; however Kulula.com cannot guarantee you a specific seat number. Parents travelling with children or elderly persons are advised to not sit on the seats with ‘exit’ marked on the headrest.
Kulula’s food and beverages can be bought on-board the aircraft with debt or credit cards. No cash payments will be allowed. The on-board menu is diverse and caters for everyone. The on-board menu has both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. There are also sandwiches, nuts, chocolates, biltong and chips available for purchase.
